New work: “Marilyn Monroe” and “Amidst Mist”

I have shows coming up!

Later in November, Autour de La Flute will be premiering a new work of mine called Marilyn Monroe for 2 flutes, 2 harps, and celesta. It’s based on some material I’ve been carrying with me for many years. I was hoping to use this special configuration of instruments to make something very conventionally beautiful, but as I started working with the materials, a darker and more troubled atmosphere slowly rolled into the picture, like some kind of fog or toxic gas. The end result is (I hope) I pretty nice balance of these two poles. I hope some of you reading this will get the chance to come check it out! I’m so grateful to Autour de la Flute for keeping me involved in their fun programming. This is my second time writing a piece for their programming; the first being Man Baby Motel, premiered last year by Steve Cowan.

Shortly after Marilyn, I will get to participate in the debut performance of Emmanuel Lacopo’s new project IL BUIO, which I have contributed a piece to. That piece was probably the most challenging writing project I’ve had in years, as it uses a somewhat unconventional instrumentation and is a large unconducted ensemble. The piece, therefore, presented some unique challenges in dealing with certain features of the music, notably orchestral balance and rhythm. A lot of stuff I write tends to have a pretty loose, disconnected rhythmic approach. This can work really well when you have a conductor up front, keeping everybody in touch with “the grid” using their gestures. What happens when there is nothing to latch on to? This problem led me to a slightly more conservative rhythmic language, but one which I think willl be very effective. I’ll post again talking about that piece in more detail as that date approaches.

I would love to see you at these shows! Grab tickets now and come check it out! The Il Buio show is only a couple days after my birthday, so do the right thing and come celebrate with me and check out some talented people playing cool music.
